Music Created by Game Actions

I had an idea a couple of days ago that seems to be working so if anyone is interested in creating 'algorithmic music' in Petitcom tied to gameplay elements, I'll offer a bit of what I did to get it working.

So most games have a tiny loop in which the main game runs.  You'll have an arrangement like this pseudocode below:

@MAINLOOP
GOSUB @HANDLEINPUT
GOSUB @DOSTUFFBASEDONINPUT
GOSUB @UPDATETHESCREEN
VSYNC 1
GOTO @MAINLOOP

This is a typical game program flow that most programmers will take.  What I've found is that depending on this arrangement, you can add non MML music that works on a tempo/beat timer combination which sets flags on events happening in the game.  Basically, the code above would include an additonal sub of @DOMUSICSTUFF.  Inside …

Multiplayer...

'Everyone' used to know that wireless communications were only meant for sending programs to others, and it was thought that the only way to get multiplayer was photo dojo style, where you share a system. The following are possible exceptions to this.

5- Highscores:  Indirect, but can be read by anyone if you make it into a QR and post it somewhere.

4- ghost data: better than the above in gameplay, but takes up more space. Can also be read as QRs

3- Trading: Creatures, Items, etcetera

3- Sharing rooms, dungeons or characters:  B2W2 Join Avenue, Animal Crossing house sharing, DQIX maps

2- Turn based RPG: the way pokemon does it.  In theory, it would just take longer in between turns.

1- Turn-Based Strategy game:  probably the best use, as good p…

Reviews of various PTC puzzle game 'ports'.

1. Petit tetris and Petitris

It's Tetris, so don't expect an in depth look at it.

Tetris, being the fourth or so best game ever, can be judged on "is it a good rendition of the original"  In other words, if it isn't broken or ugly, its good.  Petit Tetris has nice graphics, works well and gives you the additional feature of "holding" blocks. My only complaints are that the fancy line dissapearing animation that some people may be used to is not there, which is minor, and that the piano version of the theme seems too high.

8/10

Petitris on the other hand practically has no graphics except for solidly colored blocks and a yellow border.  The action doesn't even take place in the middle of the screen.  Blocks sometimes suffer from flickering effe…

Petit Smash Bros V1.2 Development progress

Code so far : http://pastebin.com/MKHdC4Xr

Thoughts:

  • Will need more time maybe
  • Sprite limitations not an issue no more
  • The new codebase will help organize
  • Progress is still steady
  • I'm happy with the results

To do:

  • Fix Mario's pallete glitch
  • Fix a minor glitch with link running.
  • Test sprite flipping on link sprites
  • Add Samus Sprites
  • Add Yoshi sprites
  • Create Character Select Menu
  • Create A new stage, or two.

And for all of you who have been waiting patiently the V1.2 Demo will be released once this stuff is added.

Petit Forest in motion.

So.. I decided to share a video of my current project. Just because.

That's about it. Btw, in my last blog post I said the map was only 32*32... That changed since then, now the map is 64*64 and spans across 4 "acres", as you can see in the video.

Adventures in Village 1

So, I figured I'd write some blog posts about some of the problems I faced in Village and how I went about solving them. The first one I decided to write is going to be about the property system, because it's what I came up with first.

When I sat down to design Village, I already had an idea in my head. I wanted it to be quite a lot like Animal Crossing, but I wanted everything to be outside. The game was going to center around collecting stuff and adding it to your Village to make it all pretty, so I knew I needed a way to make items have certain properties. If I didn't have properties for each item, they'd all act the same. You wouldn't be able to walk on top of flowers but not trees; you wouldn't be able to dig up certain objects but not…

Code Update

Hey everyone! Guess what! I'm updating the code for super smash bros V1.1 to V1.2

The codebase for the new game code is incomplete.

Here is a sneak peak at the game code if your curious.

This code SHOULD work inside petit computer if your avid enough to try it but it won't be smash bros at all . It's full of semi-empty subrouties! Hahaha.

Anyways.. I've basically redone the structure of petit smash bros so that it's easier to follow and modify.

You'll notice I use alot of arrays and variables that point to other arrays or variables.

I'm planning to make it so that I don't even have to think about the filenames for characters down the road, just their number. Anyways. Here it is in all it's glory *cough* ugglyness

Isuses with sprites... continued

Welll I thought making this smash bros game thing would be simple.

Turns out. NOPE!

You'll be surprised to learn what I learned just today by checking this link: http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Shadowstew/weekend-project-drop-ball-and-petit-computer-231873.phtml

The game is called drop ball.

And in the screenshot this person posted he has the MKII checkbox inside of ptc utilities checked while importing his sprites.

My current project

I thought I could share some details about my current project. Since it's still not completely formed, I don't think it needs a wiki article itself, so the blog will be a nice place to talk about it.

I actually started making this engine a long time ago, but I lost interest because it seemed kinda hopeless. It started as a text based background builder, then I added a graphical inventory for the map pieces and it slowly evolved from using text strings to using a graphic file, which sparked my interest in it again.

I would add pictures but for some reason the wiki won't let me add them from my iPad, but I have been sharing some in the NintendoLife forums. The graphics are completely boxy. Don't expect anything too fancy!

So here's the concept …

Sooo this is a blog. Okaayyy

Sooo this is a blog.. Okay cool.

first of all, hello. I guess  :3

Here's what i'm adding to My smash bros V 1.2 game.

i'll be giving the author of the spritesheet credit but this is how the sprites for link will look if I stick with this style

As you can see this is link standing.

He's way smaller than mario seen here:

The solution to this issue is pretty simple. Just make link a little bigger.

Though..come to think of it.. he might be the same size. I haven't tested this out yet.

So yes there's a teaser for all of you wondering about Petit Smash Bros.

Changelog of ^^^^^^ Level Editor 2.0

  • I'm going to use a GRP file to store level data. It will probably look like the picture to the right, without the shiny graphics and the text.
  • The GUI will have the Y button hide/show the buttons at the bottom of the screen.
  • The current tool will be shown at the top screen.
  • The level size will be 32x24.

Petit Slash II Review

At first, it looks amazing.  And it is, especially with the amount of time it can take up. As with everything, there are things that are... well, not so amazing. The amount of items, weapons, and amount of map all make it worth playing. Other good features include multiple save files and not having to lose too much stuff when you die.

Petit Slash II has a full set of RPG stats, with are influenced by the many items in the game, including those that I believe cause you to move faster around the map.  Combat is mainly limited to walking up to enemies and waiting for your character to kill them, but you can use staves to fire elemental based bullets or heal yourself, and also teleport back to the starting point. There are bosses in each area, …

This is my review of the game Petit Tunnel, the English version. Thank you for reading. To read the short version, read the comment below.

7/10

The controls of Petit Tunnel are actually very good. Very fluid motions, and not incredibly awkward. 10/10 for this.

This is where I must remove some points for Petit Tunnel. Though it looks fun, as it could be referred to as a Terraria clone, very quickly, it begins to become boring. It turns into the same killing, the same chopping, etc. Worse, when you are using the pickaxe, the sword animation is used. There does not appear to be an incentive for playing, and I fee…

Some More Game Ideals From Stanley The Idealman

Buzzsaw Brothers: Spiretal sequal to Sinister Stanley's Sawmill. It is a match 3 puzzel game using colored logs. Match 3 logs to lower the log pile and keep Little Nelle from the spikes on top of the log bin. The Buzzsaw Brothers are two beavers who operate the sawmill. Sinister Stanley makes a guest apperance.

Castle Shield: A game much like Atari's old video game Outlaw. Move the shield back and forth to protect your castle while redirecting projectals to your oponent's castle. Destroy the King in the center to win. Fail to protect your King in the center of your castle to lose. Bewair of wizards, crossbowmen, and catapults who put more projectals into play (this includes your own wizards, crossbowmen, and catapults also).

Must Play PTC Games

All right, title says it all. This is a compilation of those Petit Computer games that are "must plays." Ones that you just HAVE to share. Please feel free to add some to the list. I may add links to the games and descriptions of them later, but for now, go find them yourself. :P Please note that if I do not add your game, it may be that I have not played it.

Village (Probably my favorite PTC game so far, it is too addictive.)

Petit Slash 2.

Petit Tunnel.

Petit Smash Bros (Early in production, but looks promising.)

Megaman 2 PTC sounds decent.

Pokemon for Petit Computer.

Tristones

Also, I have been impressed with the progress of Raycraft, and I hope to see more from that.

More Game Ideals I Have No Time For, Nor Skill For

Feal free to take some of my ideals and run with them. That is what thay are there for.

Evil Eyes: A space shooter where all the enimies are disembodied, giant eyeballs from space. I imagen the game to be 'astroroid-ish'.

Sinister Stanley's Sawmill: A game I wanted to see since the begining of Petit Computer. The hero (a generic Canadian Mountie) climbs a sawmill, avoids henchmen and spinning sawblades, fres the damsels in distress, and exits the room. Eventuly, you face Sinister Stanley himself, who tosses fuse bombs at you.

Armada Another space shooter, this time Raiden style top-down. The main thing are big ships which split into smaller ships when shot at.

HeroMan: Another shooter, this time your a flying superhero, out to protect the city …

Hey there, this is the admin/founder speaking.  As some of you might have noticed, I haven't made many edits in the past several months, due to work and school.  As a result, I need to find some active members to take on some of the admin duties.

Smilyde Progress

Back at work on Smilyde since the algorithm for clearing chains in my 'dream' game of making robots wasn't panning out no matter how many methods I tried.  :(  It's not forgotten, so I'll return when I have more mettle.

At any rate, I added destructible environments and 'column' type walls to the engine as well as fixed a save/load bug I wasn't aware of until I started touching on the reserved map variables.  :)  At any rate, I'm currently building the overall game world maps right now since I've not done a single bit of actual game design yet...

Fun times.

Another whim...

After just completing a game in 3 days on a whim, I had another whim...

I had a dream last night where I was playing a puzzle game with 3 simultaneous 'falling blocks' mini games I had to control at once.  When I woke up, I quickly jotted down some ideas on how this could work and came up with a concept called ROBOT SWEAT SHOP, where you are a robot manufacturing plant manager and must oversee production of robots from converting raw materials into parts to assemble the robots to shipping robots to customers.

Indeed, this will be one brain twisting game, but I think because of the fact that each successive 'falling block' game is less and less complicated overall, that it's possible to take care of these 'side' games.

Here's a drawing with …

Saving massive amounts of data in petitcom

So I'm working on a game where you can edit levels and such and the issue was always 'how do I save this stuff?'

In Petitcom, MEM$ is a string of 256 characters or less and you save by SAVE "MEM:MYFILE".  It's good for high scores or for, say, progress in an RPG where you create a string of values such as what you're carrying and what not.  For instance if there's 20 items in the game and I want to save location of the player and what bosses he's beaten and how much experience and gold he has, I could do this by converting the flags for what items have been collected into strings (either 1 or 0...where 1 is you have the item and 0 is you don't have the item).  So that's 20 characters.  So far so good.  Then you have the location of the play…

Can't do just one or two programs!

Lately, I've been getting into MS-DOS, loading up some old abandonware on my old DOS lappy and one of the games I rediscovered was ZZT, an ANSI based action game with level editor and simple scripting language.  I always liked ANSI graphics and games using simple terminal colors and text characters and so on a whim (again) I sat down and started putting together an ANSI-ish realtime action game myself.  However, all of the things I wanted to put in there were hard to test when making maps by hand, so I started working on a map editor that's nearly done.

Basically, if you go in and edit CHR:MEGA's text characters (BF0), you get a palette of 1 bit textures that, when mixed together with the 2 color options for displaying them,  a lot of fle…

Screenshots of Combat Club card game...

The card game is called "Combat Club" and will use text graphics exclusively.  Sound effects will be minimal.

Here's some screenies.  Currently working on the logic that controls how cards interact with each other at the moment.  Once that's done, creating characters and individual special moves is next and then making a pool of special moves per player that they can select before each game are on the list of things to work on.

For now, just enjoy blurry snaps of the game taken with an iPod Touch camera.  :)

The first screenshot is a simple title screen done with text graphics and colors and stuff.  I always like this kind of thing in the Japanese programs so I did something similar.  Presentation is everything.

The 2nd screenshot shows ha…

3D Maze isn't my only project...

A while back (circa 2002) I had an idea for a CCG fighting game with many of the conventions of 3D fighting games but in card form.  I had put together a prototype using physical cards (each player used a poker deck of 52 cards and was supplied a special move and combo list) and it played 'okay' but was somewhat slow.  I kinda forgot about the game until recently and decided to rework it to be faster paced while still being fun and feeling like a fighting game.  I came up with new rules (still using deck of 52 cards) but it still felt somewhat slow so I reworked the rules even further, and came up with something I think is pretty fun.  Although it's not balanced yet and I haven't even created all the characters and special moves and such, …

Possible Changes to 3D Maze Game engine...

I had seen this video a while back:

What threw me off is the graphics.  I was thinking it was a raycaster engine.  But I finally downloaded the source and found out it's not that at all.  It uses sprite animation to simulate movement (i.e. Sega System16) in 3D.  Aside from it being extremely confusing, it comes at a time when the idea of using PetitCom for a Super Scaler game (Super Scaler refers to games like Space Harrier, G-Loc, Alien3:  The Gun, Space Gun, etc.) is in my mind and I'm thinking if I can modify the current game to satisfy my desire to make a maze-walking game and a super scaler in one.  Plus, this program definitely makes me think if nothing else, I could make it look much better than this effort so that it's not confusing…

3D Maze Game

Hi, PetitCom/Puchikom fellows.  I'll be using this space to update progresson a currently untitled 3D maze exploration game I'm working to put together.  Don't get too excited.  It's 3D in the same way that Wizardry is 3D.  It's still '2D' but with confusing 3D looks to make a simple game much much harder.  :)

Been a while...

Started working on my game again after putting it off for some time. I got stuck a while back trying to get certain things functional and so I took a bit of a break from it to try and reset my brain. Recently, I got the idea to completely scrap the menu I had created (was a bit weird and buggy) and then re-created it with some better, more reliable code.

Then I got stuck yet again and mulled and mulled until I finally solved yet another problem just last night. I think I'm actually having more fun solving little problems here and there now than creating actual game content so far, lol. But it's fun, because I'm pushing myself to come up with new ideas and then seeing if I can actually get those ideas to work. In the process, I'm learning a l…

Adventures in creating adventures...

For the past month now, I've been working on and off on my own fantasy text adventure game for Petit Computer on my Nintendo 3DS. I've been pushing myself to try new things in BASIC that I'd never even considered doing before and it's a rewarding experience whenever I add something new to the project and it works.

I've got a bit of a ways to go yet, as the game is still in alpha, but it's looking good so far. There's an intro, a full menu, lore, instructions and a game start page with its own original graphic. After that, there's 3 branching stories that follow either a wizard, a warrior or a wanderer. You decide who your character is and follow the story from there.

It's basically a choose-your-own-adventure type game, but I'm hoping to spic…

Game Ideals I Am Tossing To The Masses Because I Am Not A Good Programer.

1) DarkRace3001: A game based on the old video game Death Race, where your car runs over "gremlins" which turn into headstones ('t'). If you hit a headstone, you lose the game. The object, to get a huge score by running over "grombies" (my name for them), the score being 1 point per each, and avoid the headstones. Ideal name for this game: Dark Race 3001. Graphics using only the keyboard. Input via left and right shoulder buttons and a button (to acelerate).

2) Key+Door: Your on a series of platforms, and you must work your way to the key, grab the key, then go to the door to exit. Simple? Prehaps, but not easy as monsters are in your way.
